Whats the apple pip?
My name is Pip King, I am 18 years old and am studying Furniture Studies at College, then hoping to move on to Furniture restoration at University.
My Mum and I came up with the idea of 'toadies' in our garden shed back in July 2011. It stemmed from upholstering a log, next we made a pad out red vinyl with white spots. The log was too heavy so it was carved in to a mushroom shape and the ideas kept escalating until we had 50 unique Toadies and were lucky enough to get a pitch at Greenman Festival 2011 in August. We did really well and the feedback was amazing, everyone fell in love with our Toadies. We became busy through the winter and managed to book two festivals; One Love Festival and Greenman Festival, so worked extremely hard and created 140 unique Toadies.
Its a family run business. My mum hand sews all the spots and pads. We employ a friend to carve, my dad was the main carver but due to work he isnt really able to devote time to toadies. Then my job is to sand and finish the stumps. The final stage is upholstering them which is shared between Mum and I. All in all one toadie takes around 4 hours to make and each is made with love!
All the wood sourced from a local timber mill, the material is also from a local upholstery supplier we aim to stay sustainable and local. Take a look around and let us know what you think!
